SUMMARY:Cops\, Curfews\, and the Criminalization of Black Youth in DC
DESCRIPTION:An Assata Shakur Study Groups session of Pan-African Community Action (PACA)\n\n\n\nIn D.C.\, Black youth are disproportionately targeted through curfews\, police surveillance\, and the school-to-prison pipeline\, reinforcing a system built to criminalize and incarcerate them. These actions are part of a broader history of subjugation and violence rooted in slavery\, colonialism\, and capitalism. However despite this repression\, youth have always played a central role in revolutionary movements against state oppression. From the Black Panther Party to the Young Lords\, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and the Black Liberation Army\, Black youth have been at the forefront of organizing for community power and social transformation. \nJoin Pan African Community Action (PACA) for the next Assata Shakur Study Group to explore how the criminalization of Black youth operates in D.C. and why it’s essential for youth to be at the heart of revolutionary response to community issues. \nLight snacks and refreshments will be provided! \nThis is a hybrid event with an option to participate online. Select the appropriate option when you register. If you select the option to participate on Zoom\, an access link will be emailed to you on the day of the event. \nIf attending in person\, please wear a mask and don’t come if you’re sick!

SUMMARY:The Harm of Crime Bills and the Future of Community Power in Chocolate City
DESCRIPTION:A community town hall about the targeting of the Black working class by the Secure DC Crime Bill and real solutions for community safety.\n\n\n\nThe “Secure DC” Omnibus Crime Bill is the latest attempt by the DC government to impose law and order and advance the war against the Black working class. The bill allows police to detain and identify people for public transportation fare evasion\, stop people for mask wearing if they believe they’re “suspicious”\, and create “drug free zones” making it illegal to gather in certain areas for up to five days. \nNo adequate solutions are provided that address the root issues that lead to street-level crime: poverty\, addiction\, food insecurity\, inadequate housing\, and capitalist exploitation. Instead\, the bill targets the Black working class people in DC\, particularly the youth of Southeast DC. \nPan-African Community Action (PACA) invites you to this community townhall meeting designed to unpack the implications of the crime bill and discuss real solutions for community safety\, including Community Control Over the Police! \nLunch will be provided and there will be a live performance by the DC Afro Go-Go roots collective Crank Lu’Kongo Unplugged. \nThis event is free and open to the public. A $10 donation is requested but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. \nOn site childcare will be provided.

SUMMARY:The Criminalization of Black Youth in DC
DESCRIPTION:An Assata Shakur Study Groups session of Pan-African Community Action (PACA)\n\n\n\nIn D.C.\, Black youth aren’t just failed by the system — they’re targeted by it. From police harassment and surveillance to school pushout and incarceration\, the state criminalizes Black children as a way to maintain social control and protect capital. These attacks aren’t accidental — they’re part of a long legacy of anti-Black violence rooted in slavery\, colonialism\, and capitalism. \nJoin Pan African Community Action (PACA) for our next session of the Assata Shakur Study Group\, a discussion that breaks down how the criminalization of Black youth functions in D.C. and why and how we must respond with people’s survival programs and a mass movement rooted in revolutionary struggle and building power. Black youth deserve safety\, dignity\, and self-determination and it’s on us to organize for it. \nLight snacks and refreshments will be provided! \nThis is a hybrid event with an option to participate online. SUMMARY:Building Revolutionary Alternatives to Capitalist Healthcare - Part 2
DESCRIPTION:An Assata Shakur Study Groups session of Pan-African Community Action (PACA)\n\n\n\nIn the U.S.\, the capitalist healthcare system doesn’t just fail Black people\, it actively exploits and endangers us\, especially the Black working class. Chronic illnesses like hypertension\, diabetes\, asthma\, and heart disease are more prevalent in Black communities and driven by structural inequality. From overwork and unsafe labor conditions to polluted neighborhoods\, high-stress living\, and lack of access to affordable\, preventative care. The ruling class wants us to believe there is no alternative — but there are models rooted in people-centered\, revolutionary values that prove otherwise. \nJoin Pan-African Community Action (PACA) for Part 2 of our Assata Shakur Study Groupseries\, where we’ll explore how capitalist healthcare harms the Black working class\, examine global models that put people over profit\, and strategize toward building independent systems of community control and collective care.

SUMMARY:Building Revolutionary Alternatives to The Capitalist Healthcare System
DESCRIPTION:An Assata Shakur Study Groups session of Pan-African Community Action (PACA)\n\n\n\nIn the U.S\, capitalism prioritizes profit over people\, turning public health and healthcare into a commodity rather than a right. This results in the underfunding of hospitals and clinics in predominantly Black neighborhoods\, inadequate access to medical care due to racialized economic inequalities\, disproportionate exposure to food deserts and environmental health hazards such as air pollution and contaminated water\, and systematic medical neglect in prisons. While we are led to believe things can be no other way\, the parasites who profit from this status quo do not want us to know that there are alternative\, revolutionary models that actually exist. Models that practice prioritizing healthcare as a human right. \nJoin Pan-African Community Action (PACA) for an interactive Assata Shakur Study Groupsession\, where we will dissect the contradiction of the US healthcare system\, unpack lessons from the Cuban approach to health\, and discuss what African (Black) working class communities must do to win community control over health.

SUMMARY:African Liberation Day: Continuing the Struggle for a FREE Africa
DESCRIPTION:An Assata Shakur Study Groups session of Pan-African Community Action (PACA)\n\n\n\nIn 1963\, African Liberation Day (ALD) was established as a permanent institution in the Pan-African movement\, symbolizing the global struggle for African liberation. While we have not yet achieved complete liberation\, ALD serves as a day for widespread political education\, direct action and a reaffirmation of our commitment to Pan-Africanism. In the contemporary context\, Pan-Africanism remains critical\, especially in the Sahel region\, where the alliance of Sahel states is playing a pivotal role in combating neocolonialism and promoting regional unity. This unity is essential for advancing the collective interests of Africa and addressing the challenges facing the continent today. \nJoin Pan-African Community Action (PACA) for an interactive Assata Shakur Study Groupsession\, where we will explore global liberation struggles and reflect on the role of Africans\, particularly in the DMV\, in the world socialist revolution. \nLight snacks and refreshments will be provided! \nThis is a hybrid event with an option to participate online. SUMMARY:Malcolm X Day Community Speak Out
DESCRIPTION:Honoring the 100 Year Centennial Birthday of El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz\n\n\n\nWe call on you to join us for the Malcolm X Day Community Speakout on Sunday\, May 18th from 1:00 to 3:30 PM\, on his 100th Birthday. \nThis speakout\, hosted by Pan African Community Action\, Malcolm X Grassroots Movement DC Chapter\, Diaspora Palante Collective\, the Palestinian Youth Movement-DMV\, and the All-African People’s Revolutionary Party\, is to honor the legacy of Malcolm X by continuing his work — not through symbolic remembrance\, but through political action\, grassroots organizing\, and community connection. For over 20 years\, Malcolm X Day was commemorated in SE DC and we hope to reignite that tradition with the year’s speakout. \nThis is not a symbolic celebration — it’s a call to action. \nWe believe the only way to confront and transform these conditions is through mass movement building\, strong grassroots organizations\, and a clear strategy to organize for and win power in our communities. Malcolm X taught that liberation would not come from appealing to systems that oppress us\, but through collective struggle\, political education\, and community-led resistance. \n“Power in defense of freedom is greater than power in behalf of tyranny and oppression\, because power\, real power\, comes from conviction which produces action\, uncompromising action. It also produces insurrection against oppression. This is the only way you end oppression—with power.” -Malcolm X \nThis Speakout is designed to: \n\nCommemorate the legacy of Malcolm X and reignite the tradition of Malcolm X Day in Southeast DC\nProvide political education and relevant analysis on current events that have an impact on our communities\nExpose the systemic violence\, exploitation\, and corruption caused by local and federal governments in DC\nBuild connections among Southeast DC residents organizations to strategize\, share sources\, and build political unity.\n\nWhat to expect: \n\nSpeeches from PACA and partner organizations.\nCommunity comments\nRadical Black artistic performances\nFree snacks and refreshments\nBooks\, zines\, flyers\, and organizing materials\n\nEvent Details:Date: Sunday\, May 18Time: 1:00 – 3:30 PM \nLocation: Malcolm X (Shepard) Park at the intersection of Malcolm X Ave & MLK Jr. Ave SE \nThis event is open to all. \nWe invite you to show up\, bring your voice\, and take part in the work of liberation. \nPlease let us know that you’lll plan to turnout!

SUMMARY:Pan-Africanism 101
DESCRIPTION:An Assata Shakur Study Groups session of Pan-African Community Action (PACA)\n\n\n\nWhat is Pan-Africanism? The idea that all Black people around the world are connected due to our origin in Africa and that we share a common history and destiny goes back centuries but is not widely accepted. Those known as Pan-Africanists say that all Black people are in fact Africans and belong to a continental African nation. How does what happens in Africa impact African (Black) people in other places around the world and vice versa\, like those of us in Southeast DC for example? \nJoin Pan-African Community Action (PACA) for this interactive\, multimedia Assata Shakur Study Group session to learn together what it means to struggle for Pan-Africanism\, to struggle in a way that unites African people around the world to concretely address the common political and economic problems we face.

SUMMARY:A Global Perspective On Policing\, Community Safety and Security
DESCRIPTION:An Assata Shakur Study Groups session of Pan-African Community Action (PACA)\n\n\n\nSince the rise of the movement to challenge the dire consequences of over-policing in the U.S.\, the nature of U.S. police are assumed by many to be the universal characteristics of police internationally. Which has obscured the root causes of the conditions we seek to change and the path forward. \nJoin Pan-African Community Action (PACA) for this interactive\, multimedia Assata Shakur Study Group session to broaden our thinking about policing and community safety by unpacking generalized preconceived notions and misconceptions by comparing the U.S. settler colonialist model with those forged through struggles for decolonization and self-determination. \nLight snacks and refreshments will be provided! \nThis is a hybrid event with an option to participate online. SUMMARY:The DC Government's War on Southeast
DESCRIPTION:An Assata Shakur Study Groups session of Pan-African Community Action (PACA)\n\n\n\nIn February\, U.S. president Donald Trump called for a federal takeover of DC\, claiming “too much crime” and “homeless encampments” are on and around federal property. Then he recently signed an executive order that establishes a task force to make D.C. “what it should be — the pride of every American to whom it belongs.” The taskforce will be made up of several federal agencies and chaired by his Homeland Security advisor. The response of DC Mayor Bowser has been to pledge her cooperation with the Trump administration\, contrary to the feelings of DC residents. These developments spell new levels of repressive criminalization and economic oppression on the way against the Black / African people of the city\, especially in Southeast. \nJoin PACA for this interactive\, multimedia Assata Shakur Study Group session on why dependence on local legislators to protect our interests is futile\, what the root causes session on why dependence on local legislators to protect our interests is futile\, what the root causes are of our situation\, and how the people must be our own liberators. \nFood will be provided! \nThis is a hybrid event with an option to participate online. SUMMARY:Revolution In These Times: A Black Liberation Book Talk
DESCRIPTION:An analysis of how today’s resurgent right-wing agenda is an outgrowth of the ongoing and historical political struggle.\n\n\n\nThe newly released book Revolution In These Times\, by veteran Black Panther Party member\, Black Liberation Army leader\, and former political prisoner Dhoruba Bin Wahad\, delivers an analysis of how today’s resurgent right-wing agenda is an outgrowth of the ongoing and historical political struggle between the oppressed masses and settler-colonialism of America and Europe. Bin Wahad not only explores how white supremacist politics have recaptured the American imagination but also prescribes a radical grassroots response to counter this ideology and supplant the violent state repression that keeps it in power. \nEngage directly with Dhoruba Bin Wahad live from his residence in Ghana for the DC launch of his book\, in a discussion that pieces together fight-back strategies against the police and the state through a process of mobilizing in the streets\, on the block\, and in our communities\, while gathering mass through antifascist coalition-building in a manner unrealized since the 1960s and 1970s. At this Black Liberation Book Talk you will get a primer on how Bin Wahad grounds us in the now\, seamlessly weaving together firsthand accounts of his own and other’s revolutionary past in the history of struggle\, alongside lessons for today and books will be available for purchase. \nDhoruba bin-Wahad was a leading member of the NY Black Panther Party\, a Field Secretary responsible for organizing chapters throughout the East Coast\, and a member of the Panther 21. Arrested in June 1971\, he was framed as part of the illegal FBI Counter Intelligence Program (COINTELPRO) and subjected to unfair treatment and torture during his nineteen years in prison. During Dhoruba’s incarceration\, litigation on his behalf produced over 300\,000 pages of COINTELPRO documentation\, and upon release in 1990 he was able to bring a successful lawsuit against the NY Depart. of Corrections for their criminal activities. Living in both Ghana and the U.S.\, Dhoruba continues to write and work promoting Pan Africanism\, an uncompromising critique of imperialism and capitalism\, and freedom for all political prisoners. \nModerated by Prof. Jame Pope\, Howard University\, Political Science \nCo-sponsors: HU Dept of Political Science\, Howard U Kwame Ture Society\, Pan-African Community Action (PACA)\, Black Alliance for Peace- DC Citywide Alliance\, All-African People’s Revolutionary Party (A-APRP)\, and Africa World Now Project. \nSpecial thank you to WPFW 89.3 FM for serving as the media sponsor of this event. \nThis event is free and open to the public! SUMMARY:Remembering Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe: Film & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:This Washington DC event will coincide with the commemoration of Sobukwe’s legacy to be held in Azania the following day.\n\n\n\nDecember 5\, 2024 will mark the 100th birthday of Mangaliso Robert Sobukwe. Sobukwe was an Azanian (South African) revolutionary Pan-Africanist and founding member of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC)\, who served as the first president of the organization. This FREE Washington DC event on Friday\, December 6th will coincide with the commemoration of Sobukwe’s legacy to be held in Azania the following day. The event will be a screening and discussion of a renewed version of the film Sobukwe: A Great Soulby Mickey Madoda Dube about uTatu Sobukwe\, followed by a panel of speakers that will include via zoom Mickey Madoda Dube joining us all the way from South Africa. \nAbout the Film: Sobukwe: A Great Soul celebrates the life of Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe\, restoring him to his rightful place as a leading figure in South African history. Despite his pivotal role in the struggle for liberation (and as the founder of the Pan Africanist Congress)\, there isn’t a single piece of archive of the man who was once one of the most watched\, recorded\, and popular political prisoners in the world. Even the current South African government has failed to recognize his place in history and the relevance of his message today. Mickey Madoda Dube’s film seeks to fill that gap\, standing as a monument to a great man\, a global visionary\, teacher\, political leader\, philosopher\, and humanist who was well ahead of his time\, declaring his commitment to a “non-racial” society in a racist world by asserting that “there is only one race\, the human race.” \nPost screening speakers \n\nTsepo Sobukwe\, Grandson of Robert Sobukwe\nMickey Madoda Dube\, Filmmaker\,.Sobukwe: A Great Soul via Zoom from Azania\nNancy Wright\, All-African People’s Revolutionary Party\n\nMC/Moderator\, Katea Stitt\, WPFW Program Director \nThis historic event is co-sponsored by the All-African People’s Revolutionary Party (A-APRP)\, the UNIA-ACL RC 2020 Division 330\, Pan-African Community Action (PACA)\, Malcolm X Grassroots Movement – DC\, the Black Alliance for Peace– DC\, Africa World Now Project\, and Positive Productions Inc. \nSpecial thank you to WPFW 89.3 FM for serving as the media sponsor of this event. \nThis event is free and open to the public!
