SUMMARY:Where are All the Jobs? Unemployment and Labor Exploitation Facing Black Women in DC (ASPE)
DESCRIPTION:Learning lessons from Black women in the Black Panther Party\, local struggles in DC\, and international liberation movements for alternatives \n\n\n\n\nAs unemployment\, unaffordability\, and displacement continue to deepen across Washington\, DC\, Black women remain among the most exploited and economically marginalized sectors of the working class. These conditions are not accidental but rooted in a long history of racial capitalism that pushed Black women into low-paying\, unstable labor while excluding them from wealth\, protections\, and economic control. \nThis Assata Shakur Popular Education (ASPE) session will examine how the exploitation of Black women’s labor impacts entire communities\, including the ability to care for families\, the expansion of state surveillance through child welfare systems\, and broader systems of incarceration and displacement. Drawing from the organizing traditions of Black women in the Black Panther Party\, local struggles in DC\, and international liberation movements\, we will explore what democratic\, participatory\, and community-controlled alternatives could look like—from worker cooperatives and guaranteed childcare to women-led organizing structures capable of transforming our communities. \nFood will be provided!  \n PLEASE REGISTER \nAPSE sessions are hybrid with the option to participation in-person or via Zoom. DESCRIPTION:Washington D.C.’s Malcolm X Day began in May 1972 and was held in Anacostia Park for 23 years. it was a prominent community-focused celebration of Malcolm X’s legacy. The day served as a unifying force\, rooted in community organizing an focused on the concrete conditions shaping the lives of local residents. It was a major\, grassroots “Unity in the Community” festival featuring African-centric vendors\, speakers\, local musicians\, and performers to inspire Black residents before disbanding in 1995. \nPan-African Community Action (PACA) is proud to announce that we\, in collaboration with several local organizations\, will be bringing Malcolm X Day back to Anacostia Park on May 17th from noon to 5pm. SUMMARY:People's Pan-African Wellness Front - Health Services for the People by the People
DESCRIPTION:D.C.’s healthcare system\, like the rest of the U.S.\, is profit-driven and structurally racist. Black residents—especially those east of the Anacostia River—suffer from higher rates of chronic illness and maternal mortality and life expectancy gaps of over 15 years compared to white residents. Pan-African Community Action (PACA) has launched a revolutionary survival program to provide practical services while building political power. The People’s Pan-African Wellness Front (PPWF) is a community-based grassroots program led by PACA to confront the health disparities impacting African/Black working-class communities in Southeast Washington\, D.C. Inspired by revolutionary legacies like the Black Panther Party’s People’s Free Medical Clinics and the Cuban healthcare model\, this program seeks to deliver immediate relief while organizing toward long-term self-determination and community control of health. \nThe PPWF will provide: \n\nFree high blood pressure screenings\nFree glucose tests (diabetes screening) (available upon request)\nFree hygiene products and medical supplies\nFree health information and guidance for preventative care\n\nAs well as political education on community control of health and radical health programs\, including the Black Panther Party’s Free Medical Clinics and the Lincoln Detox Center. Medical professionals will also be available to answer health-related questions. Come out March 22nd either to receive services and/or to learn how to come involved with later phases of the program to scale up services\, expand into more neighborhoods\, and anchor broader campaigns around community control. This effort is part of PACA’s broader strategy to build forums for participatory democracy and build a mass movement for power. \nThis is more than a health program—it’s a step toward Black self-determination. We welcome healthcare workers\, students\, community members\, and all who are ready to organize\, learn\, and build power. \n
